Research Shows a Strong Link Between Caffeine Metabolism and Risk of Heart Attack.
When we drink coffee or other caffeinated drinks, our bodies break down the caffeine either quickly or slowly depending on whether we have a “fast” or “slow” caffeine metabolism gene.
In a recent article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (Read the entire article), genetic scientists found that people with a “slow” caffeine metabolism gene increase their risk of heart attack by as much as 64% when drinking four or more cups of coffee per day. For those under 50, the risk of heart attack increases even as high as four fold when drinking four or more cups of coffee per day. On the other hand, people with the “fast” caffeine metabolism gene can reduce your risk of heart attack by 22% when drinking 2-3 cups of coffee a day.
